🚨 The Oat Flake Cookies Case Has Been Reopened
Every detective knows one rule:
Just when you think you've solved the case...new evidence walks through the door.
I honestly believed our investigation into my mother’s lost Oat Flake Cookies recipe was finished.
After months of searching through old newspaper advertisements, researching a cereal that disappeared decades ago, experimenting with ingredients, and baking batch after batch of cookies, I thought we had finally reconstructed the recipe.
Case closed.
Or so I thought.
Then something unexpected happened.
A Surprise from Aunt Rose
When I published Aunt Rose’s section of our Family Cookbook Project, something wonderful happened.
My cousin started digging through boxes of Aunt Rose’s old recipe cards and began sending me photographs of recipes I had never seen before.
Most were simply wonderful family recipes.
But one stopped me in my tracks.
Across the top of the card were four words:
Spiced Oat Flakes Cookies
I just stared at the screen.
How could that possibly be?
The Investigation Isn’t Over
At first I assumed it was simply another oatmeal cookie recipe.
It wasn’t.
As I compared it with the original 1961 Post Oat Flakes cereal recipe we had uncovered months earlier, something remarkable appeared.
The recipes were almost identical.
Not similar.
Almost identical.
Someone had simply:
- reduced both sugars
- added cinnamon
- added nutmeg
Everything else was nearly unchanged.
Suddenly…
the investigation took a completely different direction.
Why This Matters
The original investigation was always about one question:
Now there was a new question.
Whose handwriting was on that recipe card?
Did Aunt Rose simply modify the cereal-box recipe?
Or…
Did my mother hand Aunt Rose the recipe she actually baked?
That’s a mystery no recipe card can answer.
The Complete Evidence
Rather than repeat the entire investigation here, I added this discovery as Chapter 7: New Evidence Arrives in the original Recipe Detective file.

I’d also love your opinion on the newest Recipe Detective short.
Yesterday our bloodhound followed a trail of cookie footprints…
…until one nervous little cookie whispered,
“Pssst… Aunt Rose sent me.”
That was simply too much fun not to make.
Where the Trail Leads Next
There is now only one thing left to do.
Bake Aunt Rose’s recipe exactly as written.
Will it finally produce the cookies I’ve been chasing for more than forty years?
We’ll find out together.
The Cookie Case has officially been reopened.
